Thorworld saves supermarket £15,000 per year with innovative modular dock

In their fifth successful collaboration with a leading UK supermarket, Thorworld Industries and trusted sales agent DARMAX have completed a bespoke modular dock installation, this time tailored for a challenging site in Romford.

The new system is an internal ramp solution, offering a streamlined and cost-effective alternative to the supermarket’s previous scissor lift that had caused frequent operational disruption. This installation builds on the success of several earlier modular dock systems created by Thorworld for the same retailer, helping to ensure efficient loading and unloading across its network.

This latest Romford installation presented challenges due to spatial constraints within the site. A narrow external turning area made installing a traditional external ramp unfeasible and required a different approach. After the design had been meticulously refined, Thorworld developed a ramp that maximises functionality while trimming down on space requirements. By utilising a previously unused corner of the building, the ramp allows for the movement of goods without occupying valuable operational space.

Director at DARMAX, James Corfield, said, “This project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between DARMAX and Thorworld in overcoming design and spatial challenges. By working closely with our client, we’re proud to deliver a tailored solution that will both stand the test of time and add value to their operations.”

The new modular dock has provided immediate operational benefits for the Romford site. Replacing the scissor lift, the modular ramp now saves approximately 40 minutes per delivery, translating to an estimated annual operational expense savings of £15,000.

Ian Langan, Technical and Engineering Director at Thorworld Industries, commented, “Working within the Romford site’s unique constraints was no small task, but we managed to complete a smooth installation, avoiding disrupting the store’s busy day-to-day. It’s great to see our modular dock delivering immediate results.”

He continued, “In today’s economic climate, reducing operating costs is essential. Unlike costly restructuring, modular docks offer a practical and budget-friendly alternative, bespoke to each site.”

The success of this installation comes on the back of previous modular dock projects completed by Thorworld and DARMAX for the same supermarket chain on other sites. These earlier projects also focused on replacing outdated systems and enabled the client to improve their loading operations without the need for permanent changes to the site. The portfolio of Thorworld installations cements how their approach is both cost-effective and effective.
